Geo-exchange heat pump and geo-exchange basics

By Bob Roop, Principal with Peter Basso Associates

Bob has spent most of his over 22 year career exclusively designing educational facilities and serves as the primary mechanical engineering technical resource for K-12 projects at Peter Basso Associates. Working together with school facilities staff, he has developed and successfully implemented designs for a wide range of educational facilities focusing on improved classroom environments for increased learning potential. High performance systems with increased comfort, controllability and flexibility, combined with reduced energy consumption are trademarks of Peter Basso Associates' school projects. PBA has also been involved in the largest horizontal geo-exchange system, the largest aqua thermal geo-exchange system, and the largest open loop geo-exchange system in the state of Michigan. Bob has developed efficient strategies utilizing water source and ground source heat pump systems to reduce energy consumption in school buildings encompassing all grade levels. These projects have won chapter and regional level ASHRAE Technology Awards, and have been the subject of articles in numerous publications. Two recent comprehensive high school projects were awarded LEED Silver status by the USGBC. Bob is the recipient of the 2010 ASHRAE Technology Award, 2nd Place, for the new Whitmore Lake High School recognizing outstanding achievement in the design and operation of energy-efficient buildings.
